Dear Parents and Guardians,
Our new after school club session is ready for the second semester and will start on January 6, 2009 which is the first school day of the second semester.
If you have not applied yet don’t worry about it because you still have time for it. We will accept applications till Friday January 9, 2009.
Through our program we offer a variety of clubs starting at 3:15 PM and ending at 4:30 PM. We also offer after care in our cafeteria from 4:30 PM until 5:00 PM. Students must be registered for clubs in order to register for after care. Our new club session will run until the end of the year. Please check our after school club list and choose your kids clubs for each day. Please note that we have class size limits or less on clubs. I hope your child has a wonderful time in our after school program.
If you have overdue payment from first semester, your child will not able to continue after school program till you make your payment!

| PAID FREE-DRESS DAY ON MONDAY, JANUARY 12 |
|
In order to be able to provide funds for our students for different extra curricular activities such as field trips, camps, international field trips, competitions etc. we will offer free dress days on every 1st and 3rd Monday of each month with a fee of $3/day. In order to be eligible for free dress day, students should maintain a GPA above 2.50 and a total of DPS points below 20; otherwise the fee will be $10/day.
Our school has raised $1300 so far through this program.
We will have the 5th paid free dress day on Monday, January 12, 2008. Students who would like to purchase a paid free dress should pay to the front office .

| The Third Annual Spelling Bee |
The most awaited academic event in the Department of English is almost here! HSS will be having its Third Annual Spelling Bee on January 13th, 2009. The winner of this event will compete in the Regional Spelling Bee in February. Winter break will be a great time to prepare for the upcoming event. Good luck and happy holidays!

| Art Class Supplies |
Art class for all 4-8th graders will begin in January. Every student needs to bring his/her art supplies to school; please leave them along the wall outside of the art room. Students will use their sketchbooks on a daily basis the entire semester, including the very first day of class.
Art Supply List for 4-8th Graders: 1 set colored pencils 1 pkg. markers 1 eraser 1 sketchbook (at least 50 pages of 9x12 medium weight drawing paper) 1 set of watercolor paints

In general, we will share the materials. Students may leave their supplies along the wall of the art room, where I will sort and arrange everything. To simplify what students carry around, I keep everything in the classroom (even the sketchbooks) and ask students to bring only themselves and their imaginations to class.

Our trip to the UIL district meet was a huge success! In addition to having a blast and getting several remarks about being the best-behaved school at the meet, we came home with several winners! Here are the awards our students earned:

| 3rd Annual Science and Engineering Fair |
3rd Annual Science and Engineering Fair was held on Saturday December 6, 2008. It was a big success.
19 judges from different institutions graded 129 qualified projects within 2.5 hours. Thank you to our students, teachers, parents and judges for their great effort on this event.

| Reading Competition |
Dear Students,
To celebrate the beginning of the Accelerated Reader program, we are organizing a reading competition. The top 3 students in each homeroom collecting the most AR points between 1 Dec 08 and 16 Jan 09, will get a free dress day and a certificate of accomplishment. Check with your homeroom teacher and the librarian for the best test times and availability. Keep in mind that you will be allowed to take reading quizzes only from the school computers.Also, be aware that not all books are in the AR system, you can check at the following web-site: www.arbookfind.com to find an appropriate book. Make sure you visit your local public library for additional selections not available in the school library.

“The Gold Performance Acknowledgments provide an extra tip of the hat to high performing schools and districts. They reflect areas of academic performance that go beyond the measures used to determine state accountability ratings,” said Commissioner of Education Shirley J. Neeley.
*** Schools or districts were eligible to receive a GPA for Commended Performance on the TAKS test if 20 percent or more of the students scored at the Commended Performance level on a subject area section of TAKS. To reach the Commended level, a student must receive a scale score of 2400 or higher on a TAKS subject area test. A score of 2100 is passing on a TAKS exam.

You may apply for free or reduced-price lunch. If your child is going to buy school lunch, here is what you need to do:
1. Deposit money, at least $25, into your child’s account at the front office. Your payment will be entered in our school database.
2. As your child eats breakfast/lunch, the price of lunch/breakfast will be deducted from the account.
3. If your balance is $5 or less, you should make another deposit. Your child will still get breakfast/lunch.
4. If your balance is negative , your child will not get breakfast/lunch.

| Congratulations to all students, teachers, and parents |
Texas Education Agency announced that our school has been rated as an Exemplary school in 2008 ratings.
To earn an Exemplary rating, a district or campus must achieve TAKS passing rates of 90 percent or higher for all students and each student group, which are African American, Hispanic, white and economically disadvantaged, and in each subject area. The TAKS covers reading/English language arts; writing; mathematics; science and social studies. At least 90 percent of the students who take the SDAA II must meet the academic expectations set for them. A high school completion rate of 95 percent or higher and a grade 7-8 annual dropout rate of 0.2 percent or less is also required to achieve an Exemplary rating.
